Collected in March 2010. Transplanted in bonsai pot at beginning of October when tree stopped growing. Styled today.

This hornbeam was collected in March 2010. At the end of growing season the lowest branch/trunk was removed, and tree transplanted into bonsai pot. We have styled in now. Many of these branches in the middle part of the tree (long ones, without taper) will be shortened soon, but first we are waiting back buds, to be sure that branch will not dry.

My new article about developement of two Mastic trees is published in croatian magazine about horticulture.

BONSAI Pistacia Lentiscus

For Christmas we were in Dubrovnik visiting Marija’s parents. On our way we have stopped in village of  Trsteno, were is Arboretum Trsteno.  The arboretum was developed  by the local noble family Gučetić/Gozze in the late 15th century, who requested ship captains to bring back seeds and plants from their travels.  Village of  Trsteno is situated on limestone rock, but has advantage of substantial supply of spring water, and aqueduct constructed in 1492. to bring water to garden. The pride of the arboretum are two enormous and ancient Oriental Planes (Platnus orientalis) located on the central market place, on the road at the entrance to the gardens.  They are over 500 years old and are unique specimens of its kind in Europe.

Left photo is taken today in 2010. and photo on right is from 1910.

This is our new friend.

This Oriental hornbeam was collected in 2009. After two growing seasons, repotting, and wiring this is how it looks like.

These are photos of tree in nature, that we have taken.

This Oriental hornbeam is collected in March 2010. We have shorten branches, and repoted it into fine pot by John Pitt. We are going to wire tree for first time when leaves droped. Last three photos are taken today. Tree is placed in cold greenhouse, so leaves are still on tree. On trees outside falling has just starded in our climate.
